Our house

We have more news about our container. And it's not good. You know how I said it was docking on 26th? Well, it's not docking in Auckland. Oh no. It's docking in Tauranga. Then our goods need to get to Auckland, which takes another 2-3 days, depending on rail availability. Then clearance will take 3-5 working days before it's sent our way!! AAAAAAARRRGGGHH!!!!!!

I am not going to have another rant about how we're struggling without our stuff because seriously ... get over it. I'm boring myself.

Instead, I'm going to share photos of our house, which we love. Note all of the windows and the sunlight pouring in.

Let's start with the front entrance - this is looking in through the open front door:

And looking back towards the closed front door:

With your back to the door, turn to the right and come through to the living area (see that open door? You've just come through there):

The area at the back will be our computer area. Note the built in cupboard - we have great storage in this house.

Okay, go back to the entryway and turn left instead. You'll be facing a corridor. On the right you will see this - bathroom to the left, loo straight ahead and airing cupboard on the right:

Nice big bathroom with a walk-in shower:

Okay in the corridor on the left you'll see two doors. The first leads to Daniel's bedroom (with built in closet):

Photobucket

The second leads to Noah's bedroom (also with built in closet):

Between the two bedrooms, in the corridor, is a linen cupboard. On the right, between the bathroom and our bedroom is another cupboard. Then there's our bedroom on the right:

The door on the left leads to our closet:

The one on the right leads to an ensuite with shower:

If you're back in the corridor, looking straight ahead is the garage.

Please note, there are NO STAIRS IN THIS HOUSE, WOOHOOO!!!

  1. LOVE it. The lighting is SO nice... all that sun. And the finishes are very nice, too. I like your kitchen area a lot. How nice to have a fresh slate... I cannot wait to see what you do with it!

  3. Hi Jen, I have been reading your blog for over a year now, but this is the first time I have commented. I was also born in South Africa and moved to Melbourne, Australia in 1999 when I was 16 with my parents and younger brother. We also had all our stuff shipped over, I think it took about 3 months in total. My uncle and his family had lived in Melbourne for years so luckily we also had some great support and they loaned us all their camping gear to 'furnish' our empty house! We slept on stretchers and had bean bags for couches.

12 years later we are all happy and settled, I am forever grateful that my parents made the difficult decision to move half way around the world to make a better life for my brother and I. Melbourne really is my home now, although of course there are times when I really miss my extended family, braais and chutney flavoured Simba chips :)

I think it probably took me about a year to really settle in. Overall I think I had a fairly smooth transition, but I really missed my friends, and it was hard to keep in touch with them as no one had email!

Anyway, I hope you get your stuff soon! All the best with settling in.

  4. What a lovely house, so light and sunny. The one good thing about not having your own stuff there yet (...think positive here - lol) is that you don't have much .......... housework!!! :-D Not long to go now. I'm looking forward to seeing it with all your personal stuff in it. Just one question - how long will the garage stay empty like that? :-D Jude.x

  6. Hi Jen, I've been reading your blog for the last few months too...found it somehow through scrapbooking.....your Dan reminds me so much of my Dan who's a little older...it was lovely to see the teddies on their beds (don't suppose they'll be pleased !!) but my Dan who was 14 this week still has one too...and my 15 yr old has 2 pikachu's but I wouldn't dare tell anybody !!! We moved our children around a lot when they were younger, and I'm sure they are so sociable because of it...I think moving is like a bereavement and all the emotions that go with it, the excitement, the reality, the anger, the acceptance a BIG rollercoaster...what you didn't like about the UK, they probably did - it is all they know...I'd love to move away from the UK, but I think we'll end up staying, with 8 children, (some at Uni)I think it would be too difficult to move with them, and too upseting to move without them....
But I think you've done the right thing, they are at a good age to accept the change and will grow to love it as much as you do....they just need some of their control back. We used to get everybody to put 2 ideas on paper and what they would like to do for the day, put them in the 'hat' and take one idea out every couple of days for a while...they liked that....hope the container arrives very soon...
