Cellar storage

A little while ago I saw this picture and fell in love with the concept:

What a great idea, to use the space along the stairs for storage! Lucky for me my dad has been visiting for three weeks (he leaves tomorrow, boohoo) and loves DIY so he was more than happy to begin building some shelves for me. The shelf brackets were 98p each. I bought 10 and he bought 10 for us as a gift. The wood used for the shelves is leftover laminate flooring planks sawn lengthways. They are attached to the brackets with silicone sealant / adhesive.

Is this a little too Sleeping With the Enemy for you?

Eventually we plan to continue the shelves all the way down the stairs and a little way along the wall on the right above the recycling bins, but we'll do it bit by bit as our budget allows.

My dad also put in a few screws for me to hang my broom, mop and dustpan. I love that he loves doing DIY - these are a little jobs that Grant or I could tackle on our own but neither of us could be bothered so we never got around to it!

Here's a "before" shot from when we first moved in.

  1. what a fantastic idea! I might have to steal this (seeing as how our pantry would fit about ten cans and spit the eleventh out!)...how deep are those shelves you used jen?

  2. The shelf brackets are about 4 inches deep. The shelves are a little narrower, lined up with the front of the bracket with a gap along the back for air flow. So, just room for one row of cans with a gap behind. I just went with the cheapest brackets we could find.

  4. Can I come live in your cellar?

    Please?

  6. That is a bit too organized for my liking! It's like Sleeping with the Enemy! Please mix up the cans a bit.

Just kidding. It looks great! We had a little pantry in our last house on the landing going downstairs..it's amazing how much room you can find on a wall.

  7. Also I know this is weird, but the Tesco logo on the cans is killing me. Tesco saved my life a few times when I was starving and the food available to me was um, yucky. Ah Tesco. *sniffle*

  8. What a great way to use that space! I always struggle with where to put food storage. I guess I need to think 'outside the box'. Great idea, Jen!

  9. I have to star this post--I love this idea!! Hmmm...what can I do this with at my house?? I'll think of something! =)

  10. Yep, loving this idea, and seeing as how our hundred year old house does not have a pantry (how does that happen?) this would work great. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love this idea! I recently had a dream that I found a large storage pantry in my home and boy was I disappointed when I woke up. You are one lucky girl to have such a handy Dad.

  12. Jen - I'm not sure whether you have seen this blog or not, but she is asking for ideas for making the most out of small spaces. I think this woman and her blog readers would love your ideas, including this one with the shelving.

I think that I'm coming out and this is my first comment on your blog....anyway, we have a doorway like that off the kitchen leading to the basement. The prior owners had some shelving up but it took up half the space to walk down the steps. I love the sleek look and now I wouldn't have to go down to the basement for my cans anymore. We also have left over laminate that would work great. Thanks for the inspiration.

  14. I'd be worried about them falling or being knocked down all the time. They look nice though.

  15. I just re-found your blog (I know I've been here before, but I don't know when - twilight zone much?)

We must be on the same wavelength, because I just posted on our pantry last week. We did something incredibly similar. We won't be able to go the whole way down, but having the extra space is so fabulous! Yours looks great!
