Miss M's question

Miss M from The Splendidly Imperfect Miss M! asked,

What made you decide to move from South Africa to England? Saying that's FAR is an understatement!

My husband did.

Okay, seriously, he came home from work one day and said, "Let's go to England." Everyone was doing it - there was a little saying going around: "Last one out the country, turn off the light." But we'd just bought our bigger, better home, we had secure jobs (a BIG thing in SA) and of course our families were there. We were starting to build a life and I was like, "No! No no no, way to scary," and completely freaked at the idea.

Six months later we were at Heathrow airport with two suitcases and six boxes - all our worldly possessions.

Grant was right - it just made sense for us to come, despite my original protests. We just didn't want to raise a family in South Africa with the crime, corruption and cost of living. I didn't want to have kids in a home where we slept with our internal doors locked, bars on the windows and a gun next to our bed. And since he qualified for an Ancestry Visa, it was an opportunity that we would have been crazy not to take, if only for the experience.

Making the decision to leave our families was difficult but we had to think about the family we planned on making. And I do believe it was the right decision for us.
